Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks

Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks (RTHLs) are properties judged to be historically and architecturally significant. The Texas Historical Commission (THC) awards RTHL designation to buildings at least 50 years old that are judged worthy of preservation for their architectural and historical associations. RTHL is a legal designation and comes with a measure of protection; it is the highest honor the state can bestow on a historic structure, and the designation is required for this type of marker. Purchase and display of a historical marker is a required component of the RTHL designation process. To nominate a property, the owner’s consent is required.

Before Making Any Exterior Alterations to an RTHL Structure!
Owners of RTHL-designated structures must give the THC 60 days notice before any alterations are made to the exterior of the structure. Unsympathetic changes to these properties may result in fines and removal of the designation and historical marker. If owners plan any exterior work on an RTHL-designated structure, they should download and fill out this RTHL review application from the THC website and submit it to the THC Division of Architecture project reviewer for Bosque County. The current THC reviewer for Bosque County (as of Oct 2026) is Katherine Sheldon (katherine.sheldon@thc.texas.gov). Her phone number is 512-463-9122. You may want to contact her for guidance and technical assistance before submitting the application. Further information is available in this one-page handout from the THC further explains the review process.
