EARLY HISTORY OF BOSQUE COUNTY

Looking forward to the year 2004 at which time Bosque County will be celebrating its 150th Anniversary, the Bosque County Historical Commission has published Early History of Bosque County. The book includes "Sketch of the Early History of Bosque County" written by C. M. and H. J. Cureton for a speech read by H. J. Cureton on July 4, 1904 in Meridian, Texas at the Old Settlers Reunion and Semi Centennial Celebration of the Organization of Bosque County. Information for the article was obtained from several of the founding fathers who were still living in 1904, including Jasper Mabry, J. K. Helton, Frank Kell, and others. "Notes on Early History of Bosque County" by Elizabeth Torrence have been added which document some of the historical facts presented in the Sketch and include quotes from letters, diaries, and histories of some of the early pioneers. Although small, we feel that this hardcover book will be a treasure for all those interestd in the early history of Bosque County.

Published by the Texas Folklore Society, this collection of 17 stories gives an historical description of social life and customs from around the State of Texas. One of the stories in this book is entitled Growing Up in Bosque County and was written by Palmer H. Olsen (1894-1994), a native and long time resident of Bosque County.

During the years 1974 to1978, the Valley Mills Tribune published a series of articles entitled "Profiles of Pioneer Families in the Valley Mills Area." Thirty-one of these family histories, which were researched and written by family members, are included in this book. The index includes over 930 family names of early settlers in Valley Mills and surrounding communities in Bosque County. Included in the histories is "The Origin and Early History of Valley Mills" by Gordon Nowlin. This article was written for the bicentennial edition of the Valley Mills Tribune. Also included is "Looking Backward at the Course of Human Events" by R.G. Gaines which is a history of Searsville and old Valley Mills. The article was written about 70 years ago and published in the Dallas Morning News.

Note: The book Bosque County: Land and People has been out-of-print for many years. Very occasionally, someone will donate a copy which we will auction to persons on a waiting list (minimum price $200).
